Our style is Motoha Yoshin Ryu JuJutsu (a branch of the Hontai Yoshin Ryu Takagi Ryu lineage), under Yasumoto Soke.
Often spelt Jujitsu or Jiu Jitsu, there is no direct translation of this spelling from the Japanese kanji, instead the use of 'Jujutsu' is closest to the pronunciation of the word in Japan. As a Koryu style, we are lead by Yasumoto Soke from Japan. Our style is unlike most, if not all, of the other Jujutsu styles taught in the Cumbrian region, and whilst the use of kata as a teaching and training method is often considered out of date and irrelevant to self defence, this is often because those passing such comments do not understand the purpose of kata.
Motoha Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu is based around the core principles of correct structure and controlling the mass of the attacker. These principles are introduced through kata at a basic, beginner level, then developed as you progress, allowing you to improve at your own rate.
We believe in teaching our students common sense, practical application techniques from the very beginning of their training with us, and in-keeping with our Koryu practice, we have a very practical approach to self defence, with the goals of giving our students a hands on feel for technical application and a better general knowledge, and more importantly to develop their sense of situational awareness allowing the student to either pre-empt or avoid dangerous situations altogether.
We pride ourselves on our groups safety record. We attribute this to a combination of correct training methods, and well supervised, friendly dojos. To date, other than the minor training injuries that are associated with any sport, we have been free of any major incidents. We fully intend to keep it that way.
