Happy Mums Foundation
The Happy Mums Foundation is a Community Interest Company (a social enterprise) which supports women to be happy mums. Our core aim is to provide local, practical and peer-led services across Carlisle and North Cumbria.
Offering room hire for classes, events, meetings and therapy sessions from our studios at the Coach House Centre (just off junction 43 of the M6) we generate income to enable to Foundation to achieve its objectives to prevent and alleviate maternal mental health problems.
Managing Director, Katherine Rutherford, is a FEDANT accredited antenatal teacher, delivering weekly classes and workshops under the national ‘Daisy Birthing’ brand, helping women and their partners to prepare for a positive birth experience. Income from these classes cross-subsidises free places for women with existing mental health problems, and reduced fees for those on low incomes.
The Foundation is able to commission courses such as ‘Mindfulness for Mums’, which offers all local mums the chance to learn new techniques for relaxation and good emotional well-being, and to develop key support networks.
Tailored support is offered to women experiencing maternal mental health problems, like postnatal depression, through weekly peer groups, affiliated with the national charity PANDAS (Pre and Postnatal Depression Advice and Support).
We share our own experiences across social media, blogs, TV and the press, and encourage other women to speak out about maternal mental health issues. By raising awareness we hope to break down stigma and help women in our community to get the support they deserve.
