Inspired by Andy Fearon’s dream to “Give a Day to the City”, many Carlisle Ambassadors including Capita, Story Contracting, Carlisle College, University of Cumbria, CITO Cleaning, Riverside, Eco-tech Systems and Carlisle City Council worked with residents, community groups and other businesses to bring a new lease of life to areas in the city. They worked to improve facilities in local spaces and buildings. From riverside walks to community areas and hostels – something special took place with collaboration from so many people. “ Giving back to local communities in which we work and live has always been really important to us at Story Contracting so, when we learnt of the ‘Give a Day’ initiative, we were excited to get involved. To have 26 members of staff, including some of the their families, give up their own time on a Saturday morning is really great and shows there is a real appetite for people to volunteer for local causes. We’ve achieved a lot this morning and have had fun doing it.”Emma Porter, Head of Operations for Construction, at Story Contracting

The work that went into this project that was managed by Capita was absolutely phenomenal! Transforming part of the riverside walk behind the Sands Centre into an all access area made an immediate difference to one lady, and will do the same daily for many others who are not quite so mobile. Take a look at the video here, showing how lives were improved immediately!

Imagine what 1000s of us could achieve next time?

Watch videos here - find out what Andy and team aimed to achieve through Give a Day Pilot; see how Story transformed a community area; and the difference Capita and friends made to someone's life within an hour of completing their project.....

One of the other amazing projects managed by the inspirational Tristan Josh of Ecotech Systems was creation of a much improved outside area at the Water Street Family Hostel. All we can say is that in all of these, MUCH more than a day was given in planning, and the generosity of those who gave materials and time was quite extraordinary. Thank you to everyone!
